Dear History, You Are Often Forgotten

Dear History,

You are often forgotten. The pain and suffering Black men and women endured for centuries are too often overlooked. The slavery, the assaults, the brutal reduction of our people to mere objects for labor and display — these truths are too easily swept aside.

“Until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter.”

Now that slavery has been abolished, many want to pretend it never happened, treating Black people as if we’re somehow “crazy” for wanting to discuss our rights, our hair, and our place in society. But we know. We know that as Black people, we started with a much harder path in this world. We know we have to work harder just to secure a job, and even harder to keep it. We know we aren’t protected the way others are, especially in healthcare.

That’s why, for me, there is a deep sense of responsibility in studying medicine and doing research. It is on me — and all of us — to ensure that EVERYONE receives the care they deserve. It is on me to ensure equality, to make sure the system works for all people, regardless of their skin color or background. The fight for justice and fairness isn’t just personal; it’s a mission, and I carry it with me in everything I do.
